Green Procurement

Basic concept

In order to prevent hazardous substances from causing environmental pollution and health hazards, NGK Spark Plug Group implements proper control of such substances through its management system established to address the 1. meeting the customer's demands, 2. handling control within the Group, and 3. procurement from suppliers.

1.Customers

We meet the various demands of our customers by submitting data on chemical contents through IMDS*1 and JGPSSI*2 survey tools, AIS*3, etc., as well as surveys and oversigth of our management systems, etc.

*1 IMDS (International Material Data System)
This is a system of collecting data on the materials and substances used in the 30,000 or so parts that make up an automobile.
*2 JGPSSI (Japan Green Procurement Survey Standardization Initiative)
This is an association formed voluntarily by electrical and electronic equipment manufacturers to standardize investigations into chemicals contained in parts and materials.
*3 AIS (Article Information Sheet)
A sheet for communicating information related to chemicals included in products supplied by JAMP (Joint Article Management Promotion-consortium)

2.NGK Spark Plug Group

We have set up a hazard ranking in order to correctly manage the hazardous materials contained in our products or used in our production process. Based on data obtained on laws and customer requirements, this hazard ranking classifies hazardous materials as prohibited, restricted or controlled, depending on the degree of risk, and stipulates handling standards for each rank.

Hazard ranking Handling standard Substances covered
Prohibited substances Use is prohibited. Substances prohibited from use or strongly restricted by regulations
Restricted substances A substitution program shall be proposed and the substances switched Hazard level and toxicity are equivalent to prohibited substances, but an immediate changeover is impossible due to its special characteristics.
Controlled substances Emission into the environment and transportation upon use are controlled. Mainly substances subject to PRTR Law

3.Suppliers

For products and manufacturing that impose a small environmental load, it is important that the materials and parts that we procure also impose a small environmental load. We have published Green Procurement Guidelines to meet this requirement and demand cooperation with these guidelines from our suppliers. We have also developed a green supplier system and certify suppliers that meet the system and material criteria as green suppliers.
