Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC)
We create products in fields that require high reliability and durability by combining different materials with ceramics, which is our core technology. As well as further research into these core technologies, we are taking on the challenges of technological and product development in new sectors such as environment and energy, next-generation automobiles, and health care.
What is SOFC?
An SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) is a device that produces electricity from hydrogen and other fuels.
Electrolyzing water produces hydrogen and oxygen.
Conversely, hydrogen and oxygen react to produce electricity.
Oxygen (O₂) entering the air electrode receives an electron and becomes an oxygen ion (O²-).
The oxygen ions move through the electrolyte (zirconia) and release their electrons at the fuel electrode.
At the same time, the reaction with hydrogen (H₂) forms water (H₂O).
The transfer of electrons at this point generates electricity (see figure on the right).
This is the principle of SOFC.
SOFC Features and Types
SOFC is a clean power generation system that significantly reduces CO₂ emissions.
Since chemical energy is converted directly into electrical energy, they are highly efficient and very quiet.
SOFC has two types: flat plate and cylindrical.
The flat plate type has high output density, low cost, and is very compact, while the cylindrical type can efficiently produce high-voltage electrical output at a low current. Each type is expected to be used in homes, buildings, factories, etc., taking advantage of their respective characteristics.
Morimura SOFC Technology Co., Ltd. is in charge of the flat plate type, and CECYLLS Co., Ltd. is in charge of the cylindrical type, and both are in mass production.
Society Created by SOFC
An SOFC is a "clean power plant" that significantly reduces CO₂ emissions and is critical to realizing a decarbonized society.
SOFC are next-generation energy sources that contribute to a carbon-neutral society.
SOFC are also expected to become a distributed power source supporting the electricity needs of small communities. Our group is working to commercialize a wide range of products for both residential and commercial use.
